Why can't System Status show running processes, network connections, the system log, or the UDID?
Over the years, Apple has removed apps' access to several kinds of system information for privacy and security reasons, and System Status had to drop the corresponding pages:
- Running processes — apps can no longer see which other apps are running, since that could be used to profile users (see WWDC 2015, session 703, from 8:30).
- Network connections — the list of a device's connections reveals which servers it talks to, so apps can no longer read it.
- System log — some apps log sensitive data such as login information by mistake, which other apps could read while the log was accessible.
- UDID — the unique device identifier was used by some developers to track users. If you need yours, see, for instance, https://whatsmyudid.com/.
Apps are isolated in their own sandbox and cannot see data belonging to other apps or processes, so there is no way for System Status to work around this.
